While visiting my Sister on the West Coast, I commented on how
beautiful the pristine coastline was and how Maryland's coast was
nothing to compare. And then I realized that most of the coast is
not as readily visible by car and that a kayak would be better
suited to exploring the Chesapeake Bay. I searched my favorite
online book retailer and found Mike Savario and Andrea
Nolan's book Sea Kayaking Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. The
books listed below are books that I own and have read. I have
included the ISBN to make it easier to find this book online or
at your favorite retailer.
- Sea Kayaking Maryland's Chesapeake Bay (ISBN
0-88150-567-6). This book is a great resource for anyone looking
for good places to paddle on the Chesapeake Bay. Mike Savario
runs Amphibious Horizons and teaches kayaking in Quiet Waters
Park in Annapolis, Maryland. His web site is currently being
updated for the upcoming season and is not available.
- Sea Kayaking Illustrated: A Visual Guide to Better
Paddling (ISBN 0-07-139234-3). This is a fun book to read
and the illustrations make this book an excellent choice. It
covers basic paddling, camping, navigation, equipment, logistics,
safety, rescues, waves, currents, and tides. The graphics are
memorable making the information easy to remember.
- The Kayak Companion (ISBN 1-58017-485-X). This book
combines Joe Glickman's experiences paddling month long journeys
with kayak instruction. The joys and rewards of kayaking are
clearly described along with many insightful tips from an expert
paddler. The Kayak Companion is a great inspirational
book and good reminder of the finer points of kayaking.
- The Complete Kayaker's Handbook (ISBN
0-07-136210-X). This book is filled with actual photographs of
equipment and basic technique. This is a great handbook for
kayaking and describes many of the practical details of kayaking.
This book contains buckets of good information including: kayak
repair and customization, clothing, camping, planning, and
logistics. It also contains good questions to ask when selecting
equipment or a local outfitter.
- Sea Kayak Rescue (ISBN 0-7627-0745-3). This book
describes the techniques used during rescues and how to prevent
getting into situations that require rescue. It covers a wide
range of reentry and recovery techniques from the common ones
taught in a Basic course to advanced concepts that are clearly
explained with step-by-step instructions. The book includes
examples from real life rescues and reminders and tips to
performing better.
- Sea Kayaker's Savvy Paddler (ISBN 0-07-136203-7).
This book lists 538 tips to better paddling categorized into
eight chapters. It includes many tips learned the hard way. This
is a good summary of many things you can do to make sure you
have a great day on the water.

Essentials Sit-On-Top Kayaking (ISBN 0-7627-0337-7 and
